People never want to tell you the secrets to long-lasting relationships, or to long-lasting software.

But getting married has unlocked both of them for me.

In this essay I explain what marriage taught me about SaaS software development.

Always be exclusive with your partner, just like objects need to be exclusive to the thread currently writing to it. Race conditions will ruin both relationships and software.

Consider what your most important data is. If you can't filter your users quickly with a DB index, or you can't recall your anniversary, that will make everyone unhappy, even if you eventually end up getting the correct result out.

A good relationship, just like good software, needs maintenance. Take care for vulnerabilities, identify and tackle issues together, do some periodic health checks.

"It just works" can only last so long without a bit of care.
