FediHood came first in the poll. Many of you voted to support my projects, and I want to make good use of it.
Idea: a timeline in #Fedilab with public posts from people and #Lemmy groups near you, relying entirely on #FediHood and its API.

It would be opt-in and only available in the Fedilab app, with no new account. You can read any city without sharing your location. You only share your city to post nearby, and only when you want.

Would this be useful?

β€’ Yes, it would be useful
β€’ No, I would not use it
β€’ No opinion

In #FediHood, there are as many American accounts as German ones.
Yes, I am still amazed by how German people have adopted FediHood.

I recently asked if you would be interested in seeing #Fedilab support new #Fediverse software.
You welcomed #Loops and #Vernissage, and some of you told me not to give up on #FediHood.

Over to you. Your answers will decide which API Fedilab supports next.

I had announced that I would add #FediHood support to #Fedilab.
I won’t (at least for now) because this #Fediverse project didn’t find its audience.
It could be a good add-on to existing projects, but it might not need its own dedicated software on the Fediverse.
I don’t see it as a misstep in my contributions, but it’s important to remain realistic.

Just a small reminder, if you appreciate my work on my projects:
#Fedilab #CastLab #FediHood #HolosSocial #Fedle

You can support them through #Liberapay

Or #KoFi:

Thank you for considering it, if you can. Your support helps me keep going.

I would like to share my experience of building #FediHood.
While I still think that building timelines around you is an interesting enhancement for the #Fediverse, I think I was wrong about the way I did it.
Many people are interested, but not enough to create another account just for that feature. They want it with their current account.
I am happy to see #Pixelfed implementing it, and that is the way it should be done.

Next week will be dedicated to #Fedilab, with the release of 3.44.0. The goal is to fix the issues flagged as high priority, especially those that are also enhancements. Then I will start adding support for #FediHood.

RE: mastodon.social/@dansup/…

I swore not to speak about #FediHood any more, but what #Pixelfed is doing is great news for #ActivityPub.
Pixelfed already sends the location as a Place object with latitude and longitude, so FediHood can read it and put markers on a map.
Local timelines used to mean one instance. Now they can mean people actually around you.

Daniel Supernault @dansup@mastodon.social Places, a unique Pixelfed feature that allows you to add an optional location to your posts to make them discoverable by place!

Concerning #FediHood, the most important part is done and it is stable enough. I am not good at promoting things, and I think I have talked about the project enough. I will let it live on its own for a few weeks now and tag the release as 1.0.0.

#FediHood now has a better composer. You can post three types: messages with topics, events and communities.
There is also a bot that can put anyone from the #Fediverse on the map (a remote filter is available). More about how to appear: fedihood.social/locator

The FediHood composer with the Type menu open, showing three options: Message, Event and Community. Here the type is Message, which also lets you pick a topic.

Now you can add events to your calendar in #FediHood. The map has also been redesigned to display them all, and end dates have been added.

You can also subscribe to #Lemmy communities. You will get their posts in a dedicated timeline, with the ability to reply, vote and create threads.

You can already submit communities that target an area, they will be available to people near them.

The top two countries in #FediHood are the US and Germany.
219 people in the US and 206 in Germany, this is amazing adoption from German people.

DNS4EU and Bitdefender removed fedihood.social from their blacklist.
It was listed since day one, when I got this fresh domain name.
It had a lot of bad consequences, especially with mail delivery.
It’s over now, but this kind of problem always has a lot of inertia with services using third parties to check.

Thank you to the people who warned me.

#FediHood now supports #Lemmy through #ActivityPub. You can subscribe/unsubscribe from groups, read threaded discussions with their upvote scores, and reply or upvote yourself (through the fav button).

This is the first step: FediHood will also automatically split messages into city, region and country groups that everyone on the fediverse using groups will be able to interact with.

Fedilab Apps @apps toot.fedilab.app

#FediHood now lets you sign up and log in with your #Mastodon account. It only uses the minimal API scope β€œread:accounts”, and the token is immediately revoked. Your Mastodon identity is never shown nor federated.

Without an account, the app suggests a handle and you pick a city, no email and no password to manage. With an existing account, you can link your Mastodon account to it, and each Mastodon account can only be linked once.

For #Fedilab, I first check the crash reports I get by email, and what Marco has prioritized from user feedback.
I would like to add #FediHood support, but Fedilab still has urgent bugs to fix first. It is planned though.

Fedilab Apps @apps toot.fedilab.app

I don’t know if #FediHood will be adopted by the #Fediverse community, but I am still doing my best for it. Three new features have been added:

  • Emoji reactions to messages (federated)
  • Theme customization (with presets available)
  • An option to automatically delete your own posts

FediHood lets you build timelines based on people near you and on topics. More: fedihood.social/about

There are now more than 700 users on #FediHood, and I’ve added new topics.

You can tailor your timeline in three ways:

  • The distance from your city
  • The topics you want to see
  • The languages

Topics are more powerful than hashtags (in the context of the project) because:

  • They avoid typos
  • They work whatever the language
  • One mute covers everything, unlike hashtag variants

It also fully supports the #ActivityPub Events used by #Mobilizon.

If you want to join: fedihood.social

New topics available in FediHood, with a search field: Lost & found, Food & drink, Jobs & services, Recommendations, Safety & alerts, Gardening & nature, Activism, Art, Music, Announcement.
A "Displayed topics" link at the bottom lets you hide the topics you don't need when composing.
