Finally switched over to wvkbd on my daily driver phone and while it took me a couple patches to get it working properly, it turned out pretty nice (and was pretty easy to patch).
Realized that a nice benefit of just using pkill to toggle between on/off/auto for the virtual keyboard is that if my keyboard crashes, I can cycle through these modes to get it back.
Going to test it for a while, maybe tweak the layout a bit, then ship it as a default for #catacomb.
