The furnace room

This disused 1920s Crematorium is entwined with 100 years of Romanian history, culture and politics. The design is Art Deco influenced.

🆕☠️🇬🇧 New location feature: Old Mental Asylum Mortuary, England

This mortuary was part of an old psychiatric hospital. Inside the main autopsy area, a central autopsy table stands beneath an overhead skylight. Next to the table sits a Marsden organ scale on a workbench beside a stack of decaying autopsy reports.

The onward march of technology and innovation never halts. These abandoned places were once the pinnacle of technological perfection. As decades pass they are superseded and forced into closure. Dials and switches cease and become covered with dust.

Some of my favourite abandoned schools I have explored. Sometimes, nature may reclaim these spaces and transform them into plant paradises. Others stand frozen in time, their tiny desks dusty from decades of absence.

The old gods are fighting a seemingly losing battle. Their disciples appear to have moved on, tempted away by the new gods of technology and the bright and shiny future they promise. Religious buildings shutter their. The once hallowed halls now home to spiders and pigeons.

💉Kill or cure; these decaying medical facilities are long closed. Asylums, their long corridors with peeling paint and smashed windows. Almost pristine hospitals, with the power still on and beds still made. Silent operating theatres and empty wards.

Edendork Dance Hall was once a popular social venue during the Irish showband era between the 1960s and mid-1980s.

A grand blue dome hangs above the empty dance floor, and a lone microphone stands on the decaying stage.

Once a lively venue, it is now out of fashion and out of time. It has been demolished since my visit; now only photos remain.

An abandoned Roman Catholic church in northern England. Constructed in the 1960s during a period of transition within the Catholic Church, the design features contemporary architecture and beautiful glasswork.

On the western wall, a dalle de verre features coloured glass set into a concrete frame depicting religious iconography.

The church closed nearly 15 years ago; the failing roof needs costly repairs,

🌈⛪Rainbow chapel! The decay in this abandoned Welsh chapel is quite colourful. This was the first chapel photo I took, way back in 2015 but still one of my favourites.

🏰 Château Secession, an abandoned chateau in France that appears filled with relics. Enigmatic and atmospheric, right?

Well, not quite. The collection seems to be a hobbyist’s personal trove of cheap props and tat, rather than priceless artefacts. For example, the “cannon” was just a pipe balanced on some old cart wheels. The samurai sword was a cheap plastic child’s toy, and the globe was likewise a modern trinket.
