Only human arrogance could make us believe we are the only beings with consciousness
“There is not a shred of evidence that the human capacity to suffer is inherently greater than that of other animals — in fact, there are compelling reasons to think the opposite may be true.
We know shockingly little about the inner lives of other beings. We can’t directly measure the richness of a bat’s sonar perception, a dolphin’s playful intelligence, or an octopus’s alien curiosity. Yet for thousands of years, humans have assumed our experience of the world is somehow richer or “more valid” than theirs. It’s an assumption, not a conclusion.
This assumption runs counter to a growing body of research showing complex consciousness, emotional depth, and problem-solving abilities in many nonhuman species. A team of scientists, who reviewed over 2,500 studies on the subject, concluded: “Evidence for animal sentience is everywhere.”
