“Imilla” means “girl,” and is commonly used by women to describe their daughters. They also refer to themselves as “cholitas,” a term taken back from misogynists, much in the same way the n-word was taken back as a method of resistance and empowerment.
“Cholitas” was used to describe indigenous women in traditional attire that included dresses and skirts. The Imilla Skate women encourage skateboarding in skirts as a matter of reclaiming their ancestry, and disallowing it to be a derogatory term.
They also found a way to build a skate park and support center, teaching young girls to skate. And encourage them to be powerful on route.
