The next round of the “Feminist Linux Meetup” in Vienna for FLINTA* people is on Wednesday, the 4th of November.

The topic is “Intro to using the Command Line with Bash”.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the bash shell together. bash is the most common shell for the Linux command line interface. We will also learn about some core concepts of Linux/Unix systems. The goal is to learn how to find your way around the system using the shell, how to interact with files and processes in the shell and how to combine simple commands to solve a more complex task. After the workshop, you will be able to interpret shell snippets commonly found on the internet and words like ‘pipe’ and ‘fork’ will have an additional meaning to you.

Additionally, we will have a few of the wonderful Wizard Zines by Julia Evans @b0rk@jvns.ca lying around on writing shell scripts with bash, if you want to dig deeper.

Please bring a device running Linux, or macOS, or BSD. There will be a few spare devices if you don’t have your own.

After we’ve been aware of the fediverse and intending to make a mastodon account for many months, it took us hosting an event about “Reclaiming digital communication spaces” to actually make it happen.

Yesterday and today the 7th “Cross Movement Open Space” took place in #Vienna. The format invites representatives of local CSOs to meet and discuss a topic that’s currently relevant to their work. We’ve been organising it regularly for the past 3 years and this time around we were asking: 

How can we strengthen our digital sovereignty?
Should we say goodbye to big tech?

Over two days around 40 participants were discussing, workshoping, discovering and skillsharing around these questions. On the afternoon of day 2 some of the participants offered a “practical tips and tricks for starting your mastodon account”-session. One of our team members was there and got us on here. We are excited to have arrived and very greatful to @cypherhippie@chaos.social and @totientfunction@mathstodon.xyz for hyping the #opensocialweb and sharing so much of their wisdom and experience with us :)
