Yup, I’m hoarding old RAM. Quad channel DDR3 is about as fast as dual channel DDR4. Lots of higher-end DDR3 mobos can take 8 sticks and they’re dirt cheap (for now).
Stack a few older GPUs in a DDR3 rig (with PCIe3) and you have a nice cheap homelab LLM server like me: lydie.cc/solar-ai-server.html
