#NetBSD 11.1 released

It represents a selected subset of changes deemed important to backport since the release of NetBSD 11.0 in August. It is fully compatible with NetBSD 11.0. This release primarily focuses on security and bug fixes, since our aim was to get it released as soon as possible to address certain security issues.

Ceci nโ€™est pas un Mac mini. ๐ŸŽจ

As Magritte might have said, appearances can be deceiving.

It may look like a Mac mini, but itโ€™s actually a Raspberry Pi 4B in a custom case I designed and 3D printed with my Bambu Lab A1 mini.

And, of course, it proudly wears the NetBSD logo.

Who needs a Mac mini when you can have a little NetBSD box of your own? ๐Ÿ˜„

Close-up of a Bambu Lab A1 mini 3D printer creating the NetBSD logo on its textured build plate. The black filament outlines the NetBSD lettering and flag, appearing mirrored because of the printing orientation. The printer's toolhead is visible above the print.
Three-quarter top view of a finished, black 3D-printed Raspberry Pi case. Its minimalist, rounded-square design resembles a small desktop computer, with the NetBSD name and flag logo recessed into the textured lid. The enclosure rests on a wooden surface.
Front view of a black 3D-printed Raspberry Pi enclosure with rounded corners and an engraved NetBSD logo on top. Ventilation slots run above the exposed USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and Ethernet ports. The case is sitting on a wooden table.
A Raspberry Pi board resting on the bottom half of a black 3D-printed case, next to the assembled enclosure. The rounded-square case has a recessed NetBSD logo on its lid. Both pieces sit on a wooden surface.

Thanks in advance โ™ฅ๏ธ.

To ease the transition for new users, #NetBSD -current now includes an alternative editor to vi(1) and xedit(1) in its base system, atto(1). man.netbsd.org/atto.1

It is a modeless screen-based editor similar to nano, pico, xedit, or emacs. It is only 48 kilobytes, making it suitable for inclusion in the rescue system.

(This is real, but Iโ€™m honestly missing an opportunity by not posting it on 1 April. Let the editor wars commence!)

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 24, 2026, Iโ€™ll be speaking at Linux Day in Modena, with a talk titled โ€œBeyond Linux: A Journey Through the Open Source Ecosystem.โ€

Will I talk about Linux? Of course. But Iโ€™ll also talk about BSD, illumos, monocultures, and why we should never forget that there are always other paths worth exploring.

Linux proved that an alternative was possible. It would be a shame if that alternative became, in turn, a new imposition.

Because monocultures are a problem, even in the Open Source world. And because freedom isnโ€™t about everyone doing things the same way, but about being able to choose a different way.

Open Source and closed minds donโ€™t mix.

Open Source e Closed Mind non vanno mai dโ€™accordo.

linear cannon @linear nya.social

if you are a new #NetBSD user here is a good way to think about what to expect on NetBSD:

NetBSD 11.0 runs about equally as well on my Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC as it does on any modern computer that i have. this goes both ways.

to know whether your modern gaming pc will be able to do something, you should first ask yourself: โ€œcould i do this on a Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC?โ€. if the answer is yes, you will probably succeed! if the answer is no, it still might be possible, but here be daemons.

for example:

  • can i ssh into it and edit files and compile little programs?
    yes! absolutely! definitely.
  • can i run a webserver?
    indeed you can.
  • can i install Steam?
    hahahahaha no.
  • can i run X11?
yep! may need to do some tweaking depending on your hardware though.
  • can i run KDE plasma?
    outlook not so good.
