Larvitz @Larvitz mastodon.bsd.cafe

Hello there, old friend.

In 2010 I left my job as a Solaris admin. Sixteen years later Iโ€™m back at a zonecfg prompt, and it feels like coming home.

The muscle memory never left. OmniOS โ€œbloodyโ€ on ZFS, a fresh zone with its own network stack, and my old companion DTrace, quietly watching every exec inside the zone from the global zone.

Some things you never really leave behind. ๐ŸŒ…

OmniOS illumos Solaris DTrace ZFS Unix
Two terminals side by side. Left: inside the zone, neofetch shows OmniOS r151059 and a ping to 8.8.8.8 succeeds. Right: in the global zone, a DTrace one-liner prints every process started in the zone with a timestamp, including neofetchโ€™s internal calls and the zlogin login sequence.
Terminal on OmniOS: a new zone โ€œtestโ€ is configured with zonecfg (lipkg brand, exclusive IP, VNIC on vioif0, static address and resolver), then installed with zoneadm (387 packages, done in about 6 minutes), booted, and entered with zlogin.

Three Small Computers, One Big Promise

In the beginning there was one server, and it was fine, right up until the moment it was not.

What follows is the logical next step for anyone who has ever stared at a single server and wondered what would happen if it simply stopped. I built a three-node

#ZFS folks:

I have a dataset.

When I do zfs list -t snapshot -o space {dataset}, I get a list of a small number of snapshots that add up to about 50G in their USED column.

When I do zfs list -o space {dataset}, it says 1.45T in the USEDSNAP column.

How do I find out which snapshots are actually using this space?

Hey ZFS folks: If I am running PostgreSQL 18, can I use an 8k recordsize on the dataset? What about the WAL directory? Does that stay in a separate dataset with a different recordsize or does it all go together?

Thanks so much!

Please boost for visiblity!
