Which BSD do you use ?

I’m interested to see which BSD has the bigger user base on the fediverse and why you use it.

Boosts are welcome.

#OpenBSD
#freebsd
#OpenBSD
#RUNBSD

• FreeBSD (including GhostBSD)
• NetBSD
• OpenBSD
• I use all 3 BSD’s

another #OpenBSD machine uneventfully upgraded to 8.0

$ doas sysupgrade
[it chugs along]
[it reboots]
[I log into my VPS web-console and enter the FDE password]
[it chugs along]
[it reboots]
[re-enter FDE password]
$ doas sysmerge
[confirm a few local modifications to /etc/mail/aliases, and sshd_config]
$ doas syspatch
[it chugs along, noting relinked kernel]
$ doas shutdown -r now
[re-enter the FDE password]
$ doas pkg_add -u
[chugs along]
$ doas rcctl restart dovecot

And done.

Well, except for reopening tmux and re-establishing all my panes 😆

Important #OpenBSD errata for supported releases [8.0,7.9] have just landed (mirrors will be syncing at the moment). When you get a chance, syspatch your systems and reboot. #BSD

#OpenBSD 8.0 now random-relinks smtpd(8) and httpd(8) at boot, like sshd. Every boot, every host gets its own binary layout: one leaked address no longer maps your ROP gadgets.

openbsd.org/80.html#
Random-relink smtpd(8) and httpd(8) at boot.

$ ls /usr/share/relink/usr/sbin/
👉httpd smtpd sshd

$ doas dmesg -s | grep reordering
👉reordering: ld.so libc libcrypto ssh-agent smtpd-ca smtpd-control smtpd-dispatcher smtpd-lka smtpd-queue smtpd-scheduler sshd-auth sshd-session httpd smtpd sshd.

Saw “support for composite post-quantum mldsa44-ed25519 signature scheme” in #OpenBSD 8.0 release notes and talked about it a bit in this video youtu.be/arM_6hrnvhI. Explaining why with a quick look into the source code of OpenSSH.

🐡 Hello server30! A brand new machine just joined the fleet.

Dell PowerEdge R630 with 2× Xeon E5-2690 v4, a comfy 256G of RAM, and a PERC H730 Mini herding 2x146GB 15K SAS + 2x900GB 10K SAS disks.

That is 30 servers, actually 32. :)
Thanx for all the support!

Psst… Coffee time at BSD Cafe! ☕️

It might be a little early, but if you fancy a sip of BSD, the Barista is ready to serve!

PS: many of you are trying, so the images server is out of bandwidth. It may be a little slow to boot 😉

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 24, 2026, I’ll be speaking at Linux Day in Modena, with a talk titled “Beyond Linux: A Journey Through the Open Source Ecosystem.”

Will I talk about Linux? Of course. But I’ll also talk about BSD, illumos, monocultures, and why we should never forget that there are always other paths worth exploring.

Linux proved that an alternative was possible. It would be a shame if that alternative became, in turn, a new imposition.

Because monocultures are a problem, even in the Open Source world. And because freedom isn’t about everyone doing things the same way, but about being able to choose a different way.

Open Source and closed minds don’t mix.

So…I heard #OpenBSD has a new release 8.0 TODAY, and the latest Intel/AMD graphics cards work. I copied the install image to a USB drive and booted. Does it run on this NEW laptop? Yes, yes it does:

✅️ easy and intuitive install
✅️ FULL disk encryption, super easy
✅️ wired networking just works
✅️ X11 worked by default
✅️ touchscreen works
✅️ full resolution hardware accelerated graphics, glxgears installed by default 😍
✅️ XFCE4 was easy to install, just required adding “exec startxfce4” in home directory .xsession
✅️ librewolf in repository
✅️ all the fine BSD utilities that I grew up with, including xv
✅️ solvespace, kicad, libreoffice, freecad, vlc, mpv, mplayer, mpg123, you name it likely it is there
✅️ This is UNIX, I know this!

bugs to figure out: uploading the screenshot did not work as librewolf cannot access my Downloads directory for some reason. XFCE4 has the same problem attempting to set the desktop background. Touchpad stops working momentarily at times, while scrolling still works. Need to figure out how to get wireless working, might be a simple procedure. This is a new laptop, so issues like this might be expected.
