I love a cartoon that sums up a line of argument I have often made as a political economist, so here’s a great example from the (recently deceased) P.C.Vey - whose work appeared in the New Yorker & elsewhere.

The Norwegian Forbrukerrådet (Consumer Council) is an independent organisation that represents the interests of consumers in Norway. Obsolescence & Circular Economy Polics Obsolescence (planned obsolescence) describes the deliberate shortening of a product’s lifespan by manufacturers in order to boost consumption. This can be achieved through technical, functional or aesthetic measures. The circular economy aims to use resources more efficiently, minimise waste and keep products, materials and components in the economic cycle for as long as possible. Reuse, repair, refurbishment and recycling are intended to create a more sustainable economic system. Policy measures promote: - the durability of products, - ease of repair, - recycling standards, - manufacturer responsibility (e.g. through extended producer responsibility, EPR).

The recent episode in Ceuta, with the Moroccans who came to walk through the streets of the city, is undoubtedly staged.

Thousands of young dudes, well-organized, smiling and shouting “Spain! Trabajar!”, walking around, hanging out, making pictures and then dutifully returning back under a supervision of 2 (two) policemen, armed with jacks? C’mon.

I wonder if it’s staged by Spanish rights on US money or directly by Americans.
