New post: Have You Tried Turning TalkBack Off and On Again?
An Android bug can kill touch exploration for every screen reader until you reboot. I traced it to a stuck injected pointer in the input dispatcher and sent Google Disability Support a detailed report. Their answer: turn TalkBack off and on, clear Accessibility Suite’s cache, and reboot. Only then would they consider passing it to an engineer. Their form wouldn’t even accept my logs, only screenshots.

Accessibility A11y Android TalkBack ScreenReader
+2 Less Blind Google
aaron @fireborn dragonscave.space

Windows testers wanted: an early alpha of AAE, the Accessible Android Emulator, is ready to try on Windows.

AAE lets blind people create, run and test Android virtual devices without sighted help. Every device has a screen reader from its first boot, takes your keyboard, and plays its audio through your computer.

This is a very early build. It hasn’t been run by anyone but me yet, things will break, and parts of the Mac app are still missing.

What’s there:

  • Setting up Google’s emulator and tools for you, no Android Studio needed
  • Creating, starting, stopping, copying and wiping devices, with Backtalk or your own screen reader
  • Device mode: your whole keyboard goes to Android, Alt Tab and the Windows key included, while NVDA and JAWS keep their own keys. Control Windows Escape brings it back
  • Gesture mode: screen reader gestures from the keyboard
  • Installing apps, the clipboard both ways, screenshots, the device’s volume
  • AAE’s messages spoken through NVDA, JAWS or Narrator
  • Updates itself, so you’ll be offered the next stable release

Not there yet: the accessibility inspector, speech log, device log, shell, apps and accessibility services windows, snapshots, battery and location. The aae command line, installed alongside the app, does all of these meanwhile. Open a command prompt in AAE’s folder and run aae help.

You need Windows 10 or 11 on an Intel or AMD processor (not ARM), with Windows Hypervisor Platform turned on in Windows features. AAE isn’t signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn you: choose More info, then Run anyway.

If something goes wrong, Help, Save Diagnostic Report makes a text file you can read before sending. Tell me which screen reader you use, and whether AAE’s messages were spoken. Replies here or GitHub issues are both fine.

RE: mastodon.nl/@doeidag/…

Aanrader!

🚨 GOOGLE IS KILLING ANDROID FREEDOM. 🚨

This #DiDay we call on you to take action & sign the petition:
change.org/p/…

Because Google must not decide what you can & can’t download on YOUR Android device.

This undermines one of Android’s defining features: the freedom to install software from wherever you choose. 😤

#Android is supposed to be open, & your phone should be yours → NOT GOOGLES.

It’s time to support open alternatives like @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social ✊

92 DAYS UNTIL LOCKDOWN

Starting in 2027*, a silent update, nonconsensually pushed by
Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't
registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and
handed over government ID.

Every app and every device, worldwide, with no opt-
out.

⛓️ Today, Google has taken the next step in enclosing the #Android ecosystem by starting to enforce its developer verification program in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

No better time than now to recommend the best apps from everyone’s favorite #FOSS app store, F-Droid.

We’ll start: Librera Reader, Image Toolbox, LocalSend, AntennaPod, FMD, Capy Reader, Unexpected Keyboard, Voice Audiobook Player, Aegis Authenticator…

#Google Is Closing Android: And Taking Your Freedom With It

The #Android story is a warning: when you depend on a platform built by a company whose interests diverge from yours, you eventually lose. The solution is not a different Big Tech provider, it is infrastructure built on fundamentally different principles.
