Google allowed a fake malware app disguising itself as Google Chrome onto the Google Play Store and even allowed the dev to use their ad platform to push it above its own official listing:

I’m slowly getting back to #HolosSocial and #CastLab.
I’ve seen people say Holos is now closed source. That’s not the case. It’s still on the official #FDroid, built from source. My custom repo just runs alongside it for faster updates and betas.
I’ve never released an app or server version without publishing the source code first, and I never will. Open source isn’t a label. It’s code you can read before you install an app or use a service.

Google demands every developer’s identity in the name of security. Yet more than 50 Play Store apps hiding malware were installed 2.3 million times¹. Meanwhile, #FDroid, which builds every app from source and rejects black boxes, is under threat. This is not about security, it is about control. That is why I don’t want to support this joke.

#CastLab 1.6.0 has been released. It brings several fixes and enhancements. You can now share from any app to cast with CastLab.
Videos shared from #NewPipe are automatically turned into Invidious ones, and the list of Invidious instances is kept up to date.
You can also cast your phone audio to a speaker.

I would like to thank you all for respecting my choice to leave the Google Store. Seeing messages from people joining #FDroid to get the app and sharing their experience with a lot of good feedback made me very happy. What I read most often: F-Droid is easy to use, and the export/import feature works well with #Fedilab.

Getting push notifications with the #FDroid app can be a deal breaker. I will work to make everything smooth in the next release by hosting my own NTFY instance and simplifying the process with #Fedilab, even making it transparent.
My favorite Mastodon app, Fedilab, is no longer on Google Play, but you can still get it from F-Droid.
You can import your old settings, too. It’s easy and only takes a few minutes. I’m not an experienced F-Droid user, but everything went smoothly…

Did you know that to be available on Google, I had to:
I am really upset by this difference in strictness, where I am stuck.
This cost a lot of energy because they made everything simple for the end user but not for the devs.
All these actions are not for protecting you, it’s for controlling you.
