Das sehe ich genau so! Bei vutuv.de wird auch alles auf eigener Hardware in Deutschland gemacht. Nichts in der Cloud. Obwohl das oft kostengünstiger wäre.

vutuv is already fast. I want to go one step further, because not everybody has fiber at home or Starlink on the roof: members on a slow or metered line now have a switch of their own. You find it under Settings → Appearance → Low-bandwidth mode (vutuv.de/settings/bandwidth), or as a box on the sign-up form. It is off by default and can be switched off again at any time.
Smaller pictures. Post photos, pictures from other networks, link screenshots and profile covers come in a lite version: about the size they are shown at, in a stronger compression. Measured on vutuv.de, a post photo is 12 kB instead of 44 kB, a link screenshot 3 kB instead of 13 kB, a cover 8 kB instead of 34 kB. Avatars stay as they are (for now); they are under 2 kB each.
Full quality on request. Every lite picture carries a small HD control in its corner. One tap loads the full version in place, and it stays loaded while the page updates. The lightbox opens a photo at 1,600 px instead of 2,560 px.
A plain composer. Posts and messages are written in a plain Markdown box. The formatting editor is 155 kB of JavaScript, and in this mode it is never sent. What you publish looks the same to everyone.
No preview while a picture is being checked. A photo that is still going through our image check shows a grey tile with a note instead of the pixelated preview, which would cost as much as the lite picture itself.
Pages compressed harder. Pages are compressed with brotli at level 6 for everyone; in low-bandwidth mode the server uses level 10. A profile page is 24 kB instead of 27 kB.
While working on this new feature, I was able to enhance the web performance of the standard version of vutuv as well. Small improvements add up.

Und ja – wenn man sich diese Zahlen anschaut, kann einem schon mulmig werden.
Am kommenden Sonntag wird in Sachsen-Anhalt ein neuer Landtag gewählt. Nach den derzeitigen Umfragen könnte erstmals in einem Bundesland eine Partei mit deutlichem Abstand stärkste Kraft werden, deren politische Entwicklung ich mit großer Sorge sehe.
Vielleicht erleben wir hier einen Punkt, an dem etwas beginnt, das sich später nur noch sehr schwer aufhalten lässt.
Menschen, die sich längst fest entschieden haben, werden wir wenige Tage vor einer Wahl vermutlich kaum noch umstimmen. Umso wichtiger sind jetzt diejenigen, die noch unschlüssig sind, die vielleicht glauben, ihre Stimme spiele keine große Rolle – oder die überlegen, am Sonntag einfach zu Hause zu bleiben.
Bitte geht wählen.
Demokratie lebt nicht davon, dass wir erst dann aufmerksam werden, wenn uns das Ergebnis nicht gefällt. Sie lebt davon, dass möglichst viele Menschen ihre Stimme nutzen, solange sie diese Wahl haben.
Es geht am Sonntag nicht nur darum, was gewählt wird.
Es geht auch darum, dass gewählt wird.

Man kann ab sofort auch in Posts für einen bestimmten Account Suchen und Ersetzen Regeln definieren. Ich habe ein paar Accounts abonniert, wo am Ende immer ein Satz steht, der mich Null interessiert (siehe Beispiel-Screenshot “Posted into Health health-newyorktimes”), aber Platz weg nimmt. Jetzt kann man so was mit regular Expressions ersetzen. In meinem Beispiel wird es mit nichts ersetzt.
In der mobilen Ansicht hat sich heute auch einiges getan:
Mir ist heute beim neuen Profil von @andreas_hechler aufgefallen, das Homepages, die vom LinkedIn Profil importiert worden sind nicht automatisch mit einem Screenshot versehen worden sind. Ist gefixt.
PS: Ne Menge anderer Kleinigkeiten wurden auch gefixt.

As for the rest, can only agree. It’s weirdly refreshing and liberating when a company trusts you and let’s you off the leash, and it shows in the speed at which things are done at Helsing.
The work in IT, specifically IT Engineering, is so vastly different when comparing it to other companies not only in freedom, but also the different types of projects I work(ed) on.
And honestly, now that I’ve been “spoilt” I don’t ever want to go back haha

It’s a very dynamic company! A ton of talented people, being hired and treated like adults, working on a very important mission.
I’ve been at companies where you have leadership try to micro-manage everything and everyone, and be paranoid at all stages.
In Helsing, for now, there is a ton of trust and everyone is given a lot of autonomy to deliver what needs delivering. It’s extremely refreshing, because it also means I can go on holiday and not worry that stuff won’t get done.
There’s also so many products we’re working on, each and every one of them super interesting and with its own challenges.
Is it difficult work? Yes.
Is it rewarding work? Yes.
Is it sometimes difficultly rewarding? Also yes.
Also the London office is better than the other offices and right now nobody can disagree with me.

Ich glaube @jpawlowski hat beim Thema Progressive Web App (PWA) bei der vutuv Webseite gezaubert. Für mich Boomer ist das ja alles nur modernes Zeugs. 😉 Schaut es Euch mal an.

Verstehe. Wäre da dann “append-only” / “edited”+versions nicht ein nachvollziehbarer Ansatz? So spämmt man unnötig durch die Gegend und von der UX ist das nicht exakt erwartet/intuitiv - also könnte man da etwas visuelle Anmerkung/Erklärung/… unterbringen in solchen Fällen.
Mir war initial auch nicht bewusst was für ein Rabbit Hole das Editieren von Posts ist. Am einfachsten ist es, es gar nicht erst zu erlauben. Aber das ist auch blöd. Ich vertippe mich selber viel zu oft dafür. Die jetzige Lösung ist der best mögliche Kompromiss.
Ich denke über das UI noch mal nach. Ich sehe Deinen Punkt. Möchte aber das UI auch nicht überfrachten.
Mal schauen. Manchmal habe ich über Nacht gute Ideen.
Ich sehe in einigen Posts kein Edit mehr, in anderen schon. Klingt nach Bug. Der obere mit offenem Menü hat kein Edit, der drunter auf den Du geantwortet hast schon.

DAS ist ein kompliziertes Thema. Ab wann man ein Posts nicht mehr ändern kann ist ein von mir definierter Zeitwert. Aber dieser Wert verringert sich, wenn andere Menschen mit dem Post interagieren. Warum?
Wenn Du initial in Deinen Post schreibst „Äpfel sind toll“ und jemand anders liked ihn oder re-posted ihn und Du Deinen Post dann aber in „Äpfel sind blöd“ abänderst, dann entsteht ein Problem. Das die Anbindung ans Fediverse noch mal vergrößert, weil ich keinen echten Einfluss auf andere Server habe.
Deshalb kann man manche Posts länger editieren als andere. Löschen geht aber immer.
Ich kann berichten: Benachrichtigungen gehen jetzt. Dafür Post-Edits nicht mehr. Was ist da passiert @jpawlowski / @wintermeyer ?

Zum Thema Kameras im Alltag:
Dyson hat in seine elektrische Zahnbürste eine 1mm große Linse eingebaut, die mit 26 Frames pro Sekunde eure Zähne filmt, um dann im richtigen Moment einen Wasserstrahl auf den Zwischenraum zu schießen, um Karies und Schmutz zu entfernen. Das Video ist lustig. Das Thema Cybersecurity ist es nicht :-)
Man kann der Bürste via App dabei zuschauen, wie sie das macht. Machine Learning kam natürlich auch zum Einsatz bei der Entwicklung.

Offline-Fähigkeit auf jeden Fall nicht. Das ist in der Daten-Logik nicht vorgesehen. Der Rest (so weit ich das verstanden habe) schon. Aber da muss @jpawlowski mehr zu sagen.
